One of my favorite tee shirts that I often see locals wearing around town says. “New Orleans: So Far Behind We’re Ahead.” While I am sure that this slogan means something different to everyone, my personal interpretation has something to do with the laissez-faire attitude of New Orleanians, which one could rightfully argue has stunted our economic growth and agility while contributing to a civic complacency that overlooks important things like political corruption. But what New Orleanians may lack in productivity, they make up for in an abundance of connectivity. Having the capacity to slow down just enough to experience life through the senses, or to actually engage in conversation with a neighbor, is becoming an endangered aptitude in today’s world. We all know intuitively that our need to connect is a function of our soul’s yearning to belong. So in reality, backing up and slowing down are how you get ahead in the non-quantifiable realm of happiness.
